About Us

Torres Strait Islanders’ Regional Education Council (TSIREC) was founded in 1981 as a community-based advocacy body to represent the Torres Strait region's educational interests. For 40 years, the council has been an essential link between community and government, providing advice at both federal and state levels on strategic policy development and reform.

TSIREC’s vision is for YUMI Services in Education, Training and Employment.

YUMI Services are culturally appropriate services that capitalise on the Torres Strait's solid foundations to develop place-based solutions that address the education, training and employment priorities of communities.

TSIREC is committed to delivering a “Prapa Pathway” for all young people of the Torres Strait.

A “Prapa Pathway” ensures all young people of the Torres Strait engage in, and seamlessly transition between, education, training and employment services to achieve quality employment.

Our Council

TSIREC’s Council of elected representatives is focused on community-based advocacy.

As a community-led organisation, all members of our council are elected by Torres Strait communities. This helps to ensure that everything we do reflects the needs of the communities we represent.

The role of our members is to engage with and represent the interests of their home community. During meetings, Community Representatives work together to set targets and establish strategies concerning the regional education, training and employment agendas of the Torres Strait Nation.
